The "Coffee Reserve" program

Finca Hamburgo (left), Finca La Patria (right); Chiapas, Mexico

We started the Coffee Reserve program in 2006 to draw attention to the importance of leaving intact forest on coffee farms, which offer critical habitat to both resident and migratory birds and other sensitive wildlife. We have experience both in collecting data in the field, as well as translating the findings into plain language for landowners and coffee buyers. We have most recently worked with two California-based coffee importers, Rogers Family Companies and Jones Coffee Roasters, to conduct ecological audits of the farms that supply them with coffee.

In 2007-08, we (Cooper Ecological and Rogers Family) will pilot-test a "coffee ambassador" internship at Selva Negra lodge in Nicaragua. This internship seeks to connect visitors to northern Nicaragua with the amazing biodiversity of the region, and to educate them about sustainable coffee-growing practices.

Please contact us to arrange a survey of your coffee farm or suppliers' farms.
